The Well-Rounded Nest
These five elements are what I am focused on currently: developing ecological literacy, strengthening artistic practice, building proficiency in software tools, conversation in the field and continued education.
Each one supports a different part of my process and together they hold the structure of how I learn and create.
I. Ecological Literacy
The Lo-TEK Institute is where the core concepts of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) I have been learning from. Rooted in deep thinking and fascinating conversation, I highly recommended enrolling in their curriculum. I’ll get more into this in the coming days.
II. Artistic Practice
Strengthening an artistic practice demonstrates how you want to show up in the world. This can be seen through creating documents, writing emails, dressing your home, plating your food, etc. I find this relevant in this work because creative practice keeps me grounded in both clarity and care, it shapes how I express and share my ideas.
III. Software
Understanding that software is what designers use to communicate. I’ve felt limited in my understanding of these tools, so I’m taking a few courses and will soon explore how they can support the ideas I’m developing.
IV. Conversation
Conversation with professors, ecologists, Indigenous communities, urban planners, friends, and family. To gain more knowledge and to share what I have learned.
V. Continued Education
Further readings and explorations help me stay engaged with this work. Books, lectures, workshops, and daily observations all add to my understanding. Learning is ongoing and continues to shape how I think and approach my work.
This list will be ever-changing but I thought it was important to include to give context to what I’ve been learning and the approaches I’ve been taking.
What are you learning right now that feels alive for you? Share below, I’d love to see what others are exploring.
